Bedford County Schools is proud to announce that Eakin Elementary School Principal Meredith Gilliland has been named one of the finalists for the 2026-27 Tennessee Principal of the Year by the Tennessee Department of Education.

Gilliland is among a select group of school leaders from across Tennessee recognized for their outstanding leadership, dedication to student success and commitment to excellence in education. The finalists represent each of Tennessee's Centers of Regional Excellence (CORE) areas, with the Tennessee Principal of the Year and Grand Division winners to be announced this fall during the Tennessee Excellence in Education Banquet.

"Mrs. Gilliland is an exceptional leader who embodies what it means to put students first," said Bedford County Schools Superintendent Tim Harwell. "She leads with vision, heart and an unwavering commitment to helping every child succeed. We are incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition and grateful for the positive impact she makes each day at Eakin Elementary and throughout Bedford County Schools."

The Tennessee Principal of the Year selection process includes nominations from school districts across the state, followed by multiple rounds of interviews conducted by a panel of education leaders.

Gilliland's selection as a state finalist reflects not only her outstanding leadership at Eakin Elementary but also the collective dedication of the school's faculty, staff, students and families who work together to create an environment where every student can thrive.

Gilliland shared, “I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named a finalist. This recognition reflects the incredible educators, students, families and community that make Eakin such a special place. Seeing our students grow in confidence while knowing they are loved, seen and heard is the greatest reward of this work. I am grateful to lead this team and share this honor with all of them.”
